The Importance of Parent Involvement
Parent Involvement Benefits Everyone
Parents are the most important teachers in their children’s lives. All children — including those enrolled in child care, preschool, kindergarten or other early childhood programs — learn form their parents first. Quality caregivers and teachers know that children do best when their parents play and active role in their program.

When parents are involved:

  • Children are more confident, happier and make friends more easily.
  • Children learn to read more easily and have more success throughout their school years.
  • Parents receive helpful information and ideas from caregivers, teachers and other community resources.
  • Parents understand more about how their child’s early childhood program operates.
  • Caregivers are better able to provide quality care and educational experiences to children.
  • Caregivers receive more support from parents.

Early childhood professionals can encourage parent involvement:

  • Get to know the parents of each child in your care.
  • Be sure all parents feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Touch base with parents daily regarding their child’s progress and experiences.
  • Design activities that build on the child’s home experiences.
  • Offer parents information about child development, nutrition, safety and parent/child communication.
  • Invite parents to take part in classroom activities as often as possible.
